BASTEI

Bastei – The Most Famous Viewpoint in Saxon Switzerland

The Bastei viewpoint is one of the most visited attractions in Saxon Switzerland National Park and one of its most iconic landmarks. Perched nearly 200 metres (650 feet) above the Elbe River, the sandstone rock terrace offers breathtaking panoramic views of towering rock formations, deep ravines, and the picturesque Elbe Valley.

The highlight of the site is the famous Bastei Bridge (Basteibrücke), an elegant stone bridge that connects several towering sandstone rocks while spanning a dramatic gorge. It is one of the most photographed landmarks in the region and beautifully combines spectacular natural scenery with historic architecture.

Just a short walk from the bridge lie the remains of the medieval Neurathen Rock Castle. Visitors can explore the ruins via wooden walkways, staircases, and viewing platforms that provide an insight into what was once one of the region's most impressive rock fortresses. The site also features historical exhibits, including ancient stone cannonballs, medieval defensive structures, and a cistern carved directly into the sandstone.

How to Get to Bastei

By Car via Rathewalde:
The easiest route leads from Bad Schandau through the villages of Porschdorf, Waltersdorf, and Rathewalde. A large visitor parking area is located close to Bastei, and during the tourist season shuttle buses operate regularly between the parking area and the viewpoint. A smaller parking area is also available near the site.

Via the Spa Town of Rathen:
A very popular alternative begins in the charming town of Rathen, where a regular ferry crosses the Elbe River. From there, a scenic hiking trail leads past the romantic Amselsee Lake and climbs up to the Bastei viewpoint. Although this route is more physically demanding, it rewards visitors with spectacular natural scenery along the way.

Suggested Day Trip

A visit to Bastei can easily be combined with a walk around Amselsee Lake, where visitors can rent rowing boats or pedal boats. The picturesque spa town of Rathen is also well worth exploring, featuring beautiful parkland and the famous Felsenbühne Rathen, an open-air rock theatre that hosts theatrical performances and concerts in a spectacular natural sandstone setting.

Where to Eat

Several cafés, snack bars, and restaurants can be found around the Bastei viewpoint. The most popular is the panoramic restaurant at the Berghotel Bastei, which offers excellent cuisine together with some of the finest views in all of Saxon Switzerland.

Bastei is a destination that perfectly combines spectacular natural beauty, fascinating history, and unforgettable panoramic views. Thanks to its easy accessibility and extraordinary atmosphere, it is considered one of the greatest tourist attractions not only in Saxon Switzerland but in the entire border region.
