HRAD FALKENŠTEJN

Falkenštejn Rock Castle

Falkenštejn, also known as Sokolí, is one of the most fascinating historical landmarks in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park. The ruins of this medieval rock castle are located near the village of Jetřichovice, perched on a sandstone cliff that offers beautiful views of the surrounding forests and rocky valleys.

The castle was most likely built in the 14th century as a defensive stronghold and watchtower. Today, visitors can still see rock-cut chambers, stairways, the foundations of former buildings, and other remains that reveal the original appearance of this remarkable fortress. Thanks to its unique location, Falkenštejn is an outstanding example of medieval rock architecture.

The entire site is protected as a cultural monument and is located within the strictly protected area of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park. Visitors are therefore encouraged to help preserve both the fragile natural environment and the historic remains of the castle.

In 2017, the access route to the summit was significantly improved. A new staircase and a modern steel viewing platform were installed, allowing visitors to explore the site safely while protecting the soft sandstone from erosion caused by heavy tourist traffic.

A Viewpoint with a Unique Atmosphere

From the top of the rock castle, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the vast forests of Bohemian Switzerland, the region's dramatic sandstone towers, and the picturesque countryside surrounding Jetřichovice. Even today, the site retains the unmistakable atmosphere of a medieval fortress hidden deep within nature.

Falkenštejn is a popular destination for hikers who wish to combine history with the natural beauty of the national park. Its spectacular location, well-preserved rock-cut chambers, and magnificent panoramic views make it one of the most rewarding stops when exploring Bohemian Switzerland.
