Tisá Rocks – A Sandstone Labyrinth Full of Mystery

The Tisá Rocks are among the most spectacular natural attractions of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Visitors are captivated by a fascinating labyrinth of towering sandstone formations, narrow passages, deep gorges, and uniquely shaped rock formations. The area consists of the Small and Large Tisá Walls, connected by a nature trail with several informative stops.

A network of marked hiking trails leads through this remarkable rock city, offering routes suitable for both short walks and longer hikes. The red hiking trail follows the ridge of the Large Tisá Walls and provides the shortest route from the entrance near the Tourist Lodge to the far end of the rock complex.

More than seventy named rock formations can be found throughout the Tisá Rocks. Among the most famous are Janus Head, The Confessional, The Pulpit, The Bell, and The Dancing Bear. The unusual shapes invite visitors to use their imagination, discovering faces, animals, and fairy-tale characters hidden in the sandstone cliffs.

The rock terraces and viewpoints offer magnificent panoramas of the village of Tisá, the settlement of Rájec, the Rájec Rocks with Falcon Tower, parts of the Ore Mountains, and the table mountains of Saxon Switzerland in Germany. The Tisá Rocks are a favorite destination not only for hikers but also for rock climbers, thanks to their numerous climbing routes of varying difficulty.

The Legend of the Hidden Treasure

The Tisá Rocks are also surrounded by local legends. According to one of the most famous stories, during the French Revolution a fleeing nobleman hid a valuable treasure somewhere within the sandstone labyrinth. When he later returned to recover it, he became lost among the rocks and never found his hidden fortune again.

Legend says that the treasure is still guarded by mysterious rock spirits. They lure careless treasure hunters deeper into the maze with flickering lights and sprinkle enchanted herbs into their pockets, causing them to lose their way and wander endlessly through the sandstone passages.
